A digital coating thickness gauge reading 0–2000µm on both steel and aluminium panels, with a ruby ball probe and a rotating colour display.

Clear coat is finite and it doesn't grow back. Every pass spends some of it. Correcting a car without knowing panel readings is guesswork, and the consequence of guessing wrong is strike-through — bare primer on a panel that now needs respraying. A gauge turns that into data: you take readings across each panel before you touch a machine, spot the one that reads 60µm when the rest read 130, and route around it. It also reads a car's history. Factory panels cluster in a predictable band; a panel sitting far above that band has been resprayed, which matters whether you're buying a used car, quoting a correction job, or deciding how aggressive to go. This unit reads both ferrous and non-ferrous panels, so steel and aluminium bodywork are both covered, and the ruby ball probe keeps the contact point hard-wearing and accurate over time.

Prevents Strike-Through Readings before correction show which panels have the clear coat to spare and which don't — the difference between a detail and a respray bill.

## 🛠️ How to Use

**Clean and Calibrate** Wipe the panel clean first — dirt and wax add to the reading. Zero the gauge on the supplied substrate before you start.

**Map the Car** Take several readings per panel, not one. Record them panel by panel so you have a baseline before any correction begins.

**Re-Check as You Work** Measure again after heavy compounding, especially near edges and body lines where clear is thinnest, and stop early on any thin reading.

A gauge measures total coating thickness, not clear coat alone — there is no way to separate primer, base and clear from a single reading, so treat low readings as a reason for caution rather than a precise correction budget. Calibrate before each session, take multiple readings per panel, and keep the probe clean. Readings on plastic bumpers and non-metallic panels will not register on either measuring principle.
