A dual action protects you from yourself. A rotary doesn't. That's exactly why professionals keep one on the bench — direct drive means every watt goes into cutting rather than being absorbed by an oscillating head, so heavily oxidised paint, deep scratches and sanding marks clear in a fraction of the passes a DA needs. The trade is that it removes clear coat fast and will burn an edge if you let it sit. Six-speed adjustment is what makes that manageable: low speeds for spreading compound and working panel edges, higher speeds for genuine cutting, and a controlled step down for refining. The pure copper motor handles sustained load better than aluminium-wound alternatives, and the external carbon brushes mean the one wear part on a rotary is replaceable without opening the housing.

Specifications

A rotary removes clear coat quickly and is unforgiving of mistakes — burn-through and holograms are the usual results of inexperience. Take paint depth readings first, stay off edges, body lines and panel high points, never hold the pad still, and practise on a scrap panel before working on a customer's car. Confirm the spindle thread before buying backing plates, use the auxiliary handle, and wear eye protection.
